As employees of the City of Versailles, Kentucky, Police Department our mission is to serve, educate and protect the public through community collaboration, problem recognition, problem resolution and police action. In carrying out our mission, we must work with our community as a team to ensure that the citizens of Versailles are provided the best protection and service we can give them and to establish the Versailles Police Department as the finest in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the United States of America.
The Department is made up of the following components:
Support Operations: In addition to E-911 service, the Versailles Police Department will, upon request, assist other law enforcement agencies in Woodford County by providing manpower assistance if needed, investigative assistance, and the services of the department's certified Accident Reconstructionists.
Uniformed Patrol: Officers, through directed patrol, will detect, deter and apprehend criminal offenders. Officers also take information and make reports concerning crimes and criminal activity.
Criminal Investigations: Detectives are charged with conducting complex investigations, namely felony cases, such as homicides, rapes, drugs, felony assault and major theft and burglary cases or those cases requiring in-depth investigation or special skills or training.
Communications: Telecommunicators receive, transmit and relay information concerning public safety and law enforcement activities to, from, and between police mobile units, other law enforcement agencies and the public by means of radio/telephone, teletype, and telephone.
E-911: The department maintains and operates enhanced 911 service for Woodford County. In addition to providing dispatch service to the Versailles Police Department, this agency also provides emergency communication for the Woodford County Sheriff's Department, the Woodford County Ambulance Service, and Versailles, Woodford County, and Midway Fire Departments. The Versailles Police Department is a full service police department operating 24 hours a day.
Community Service: The Versailles Police Department makes every effort to assist the citizens of our community, whenever possible, through service to the entire community. This positive relationship with the citizens will in turn provide the officer and the department with the relationship necessary to effectively police our community.
Crime Prevention and Suppression: Crime prevention and suppression are accomplished through enforcement patrol, special educational programs and positive interaction with citizens and civic organizations of our community. All members of the Versailles Police Department are encouraged to promote crime prevention and suppression.
Community Oriented Policing: The Versailles Police Department actively supports the concept of Community Oriented Policing. Some of the methods used are as follows:
Cops for Kids: Donations are raised through activities throughout the year in order to provide gifts to children who might otherwise not have a Christmas. Just before Christmas, selected children are escorted by a uniformed police officer to participating stores in Versailles and allowed to select gifts for them for Christmas. Children are also invited to a party held at the police department where each of them are served with refreshments and allowed to speak with Santa and leave with gifts.
CAPP (Community Accident Prevention Program): Versailles Officers participate in the CAPP Program held at Woodford County High School. Officers provide classroom instruction on seat belts and safe driving techniques as well as the dangers of alcohol and speed. Students are then taken to a driving course and placed into specially equipped vehicles where they are provided hands on instruction in off-road recovery techniques as well as recovering from a skid. The CAPP Program also includes the curriculum of the State Graduated Licensing Program. Saturday classes are also offered at the Versailles Police Department.
Foot Patrol: Versailles Officers routinely provide walking patrol of designated areas within our community in an effort to maintain close contact with our citizens.
Bicycle Patrol: Versailles Officers provide patrol of designated areas of the community on bicycles. Bicycle officers are able to access areas that are normally inaccessible to vehicle patrol units. Bicycles afford officers the ability to maintain close contact with our citizens and provides officers a greater degree of mobility. Bicycle patrol will also be utilized during special activities for enhanced patrol coverage and visibility.
Training/Crime Prevention: Versailles Officers stand ready to assist citizens of our community through crime prevention checks and security evaluations. House and business checks can be arranged for vacationers or in the event of special security needs. Businesses may call on police officers for escorts to make bank deposits when there are concerns for the safety of employees. The Versailles Police Department has also provided training for local bank employees in robbery prevention procedures and the detection and prevention of bank related crime. Officers are available as guest speakers to discuss topics such as drug prevention, crime prevention, neighborhood watch, and other related programs.
Domestic Violence Cellular Phone Program: A joint venture between the Versailles Police Department, Woodford County Sheriff's Office, the Commonwealth Attorney's Victim Advocacy, and local cellular telephone companies to provide cellular telephones to victims of domestic violence, stalking, and sexual assault. The intent of the program is to provide the victim with direct access to a telephone so than an emergency call to law enforcement can be made immediately should the need arise.
Senior Citizen Cellular Phone Program: The intent of the program is to provide senior citizens with direct access to a cellular phone giving them immediate ability to call 911 for assistance in case of emergency. The cellular phones are donated from members of the community.
Weekend Call Check: A service designed to provide regular checks on Senior Citizens who live alone. On weekends and holidays, members of Versailles Police Department make a short call to senior citizens who live alone. If the call goes unanswered, the telecommunicator dispatches an officer to the residence of the Senior Citizen to check their welfare. The name, address, phone number, emergency contact persons, location of key for emergency entry, and data on pertinent medical information is located in a database maintained by Versailles Police Department. In the event of an emergency this information is invaluable in providing assistance to the Senior Citizen.
W.A.S.P. (Wandering Adult Service and Protection): A program designed to identify and register any potential adult wanderer (any person with Alzheimer's disease or other dementia) in order to assist in locating and returning these persons to their home and family and reducing the trauma to the wandering person and their family and/or caregiver.
Citizens Police Academy: A nine week program for citizens of the community to become more familiar with the day to day activities of the police department. During the course citizens are offered classroom instruction as well as hands-on training.
School Resource Officers- Versailles Police Department has worked closely with the Woodford County Board of Education in providing the Middle and High School with School Resource Officers. An officer is currently assigned full- time to Woodford County Middle School and to the Woodford County High School. This partnership with the Board of Education provides students and police officers with positive interaction and helps to deter juvenile crime.
Recruitment: Because of its' professional standing, the Versailles Police Department has benefited from the competitive selection process in the hiring of new applicants. Applicants must successfully pass a written examination, oral interview, and a rigid background investigation to be eligible for employment with Versailles Police Department.
Accreditation: The Versailles Police Department is certified by the Kentucky Association of Chiefs of Police as an Accredited Law Enforcement Agency. Accredited police departments benefit from the use of consistent and proven procedures, clearly outlined policies and efficient practices.
